From the notebook of

Dr Christopher Cruckshank

3 August 1882

All the district is shocked by the dark events I shall now describe. Mrs Fitzterran being away in Bath, I called upon her husband as she had requested. I had not expected a good welcome, for I feared Fitzterran would resent his wife’s interference, but I was quite unprepared for what I discovered when I arrived at Westral Hall.

I was surprised when no servant answered the door to me. The place seemed deserted, and it appeared as though Mr Fitzterran had decided to accompany his wife on her visit to Bath and had closed up the house while they were away.

Then I saw that the heavy oak front door was standing slightly ajar, and when I pushed it, it opened with a loud creak. I stood for a while in the grand hall with its chequerboard floor under the painted gaze of the family portraits that lined the walls, then slowly began to ascend the stairs, fearing what I might find, for I could smell the dreadful odour of decay.

I went from one room to the next, pushing open the doors. I reached a feminine room I assumed belonged to the mistress and found it empty. When I tried the room next door, the scent of death became overpowering, and from my experience as a physician, I knew what I would find in there. Mr Fitzterran was lying upon the bed, curled up like a babe in its mother’s womb. His head was a mass of blood and brain, and he was well and truly dead.
